Wings made eight different ways are the feature at Jim's Wings, located in Campus West.

Those and television sets showing sports, two Daytona race video games (one of my favorites) and a pinball machine here and jelly bean machine there.

It's a college joint, selling, above all, wings and beer.

Laura and I had lunch at Jim's Wings, where we surveyed the hot wings chart, which outlines the spiciness of each variety. Diners can chose from mild, medium, hot, extra hot, way hot, Ram hot, barbecue and teriyaki.

I suggested first the Ram Hot. This, Laura believed, might be the hottest.

We decided to order on the safe side -- 25 wings, half hot, the other half teriyaki ($10.79 for 25, with 50 cents extra for split orders). We selected ranch dressing as a dipping sauce, instead of bleu cheese.

I noticed a large offering of beers, both local and regional, offered on the menu. We stuck with sodas.

I was getting hungry just as the wings arrived.

I was thankful they split the order into two separate baskets along with three small cups of ranch dressing. And I was delighted the meal was served with a basket of celery and a basket of French fries. "I like how the fries are seasoned," Laura said. "And they have ridges," I said. "I haven't seen a place that served them that way in a long time," she said. The celery sticks were fresh.

The wings were pleasingly spicy and not too hot. And if you like hot, they're hot enough that you will want to reach for more. I'd place Jim's Wings among my list of favorite wing places, which includes Estes Park Brewery and Zydeco's.

Laura liked the hot wings more than teriyaki wings, but commented that the hot wings were hotter than she'd prefer.

Trying the teriyaki wings after having five or six of the hot wings, I said, "This tastes like caramel apple after those ones."

But after a few teriyaki wings, I savored the flavor.

Twenty-five wings were more than we could eat. There are smaller orders available, but the chalkboards at the eatery did not indicate them. Just the 25-piece ones. In fact, the chalkboards only indicated the wings, the fries and the special of that day -- stuffed olives. To get the full story, customers need to look at the laminated yellow menus available at the counter. Other than wings, some options at Jim's include: Buffalo Chicken Salad, shrimp baskets, zucchini, sampler platters, calamari and chicken sandwiches. It also features a small kids menu.

Laura, who just turned 21, will get to enjoy beer with her wings from here on out. And I think we'll try them that way too next time. Maybe a smaller order, and we won't mix the varieties.
